13. Governance, Policies & Procedures

13.1 Safeguarding and Child Protection

The stipulations from the English Karate Federation (EKF) as the Governing Body, is that B.I.K.O.

as a member association must:

  • Have a Lead Child Protection Officer(CPO) for the Association 
  • The named person should have their contact details displayed on the official association website (e-mail address and telephone number).

  •  Lead to attend official Child Protection/Safeguarding training every 3 years provided by the EKF
  •  Ensure association coaches and instructors are compliant with DBS requirements by keeping and monitoring accurate records

 Have a clear Child Safeguarding policy document in line with the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts

  • The policy should include clear systems and processes for how concerns are received, processed and managed 
  • The policy must make reference to the EKF Safeguarding Team and how to refer a concern accordingly.


Have a safeguarding referral form displayed on the website.

  • Referral Form - 
  • If you are concerned about possible child abuse or bad practice within a BIKO affiliated club then you should immediately contact your club/association CPO.

 13.2 Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS)
         Every Club Instructor must have a current DBS certificate.  
         Please contact the DBS regarding disclosure certificates.

For individuals wishing to obtain an enhanced DBS certificate, please contact your local council who will provide you with a link/application and details on how to apply via their offices.

 13.3 First Aid Qualification
         Every Club Instructor must have a current First Aid certificate – the minimum is set at the one day Emergency First Aid at

         Work qualification   or equivalent. Please see:

13.4 Compliance & Public Relations
In order to ensure that clubs comply with the stated rules and regulations of B.I.K.O., a Compliance Officer is appointed to assist clubs in their adoption, and also to conduct reviews where necessary.

To further the exposure and promotion of B.I.K.O , it is essential that information on the association is readily made available and distributed. This also takes into account materials such as Association badges, ties, squad badges, certificates, and stamps.
